PHP security alert: what UK businesses should check on their websites
Understand what the latest alerts mean for your business, confirm who is looking after your website, and explore whether it is time for an upgrade.

Already concerned about an affected website? Contact your hosting provider or developer promptly to confirm the relevant PHP security fixes have been applied and verified. A future website rebuild should not delay immediate remediation.
What do the recent PHP security alerts mean for your website?
Recent critical vulnerabilities in PHP, a technology used to run many websites and business applications, have prompted urgent security advice. CERT-EU warns that affected installations could allow an unauthenticated attacker to execute code remotely on a server.
The October 2026 PHP security alerts include CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619. Fixes for these two vulnerabilities were released on 21 October. CERT-EU subsequently updated its advice on 23 October to cover a further issue, CVE-2026-115560, affecting certain configurations. Your provider should check the latest PHP security advisory and confirm all applicable updates and mitigations.
Using PHP does not, by itself, mean your website has been compromised. Establish whether your setup is affected and ask your provider to verify the action taken.
This is also a practical opportunity to ask a wider question: is your current website properly maintained and still doing the job your business needs?
PHP and WordPress security: what should business owners check?
WordPress uses PHP to run functionality on the server. Website owners need to consider the hosting environment alongside WordPress, its themes and its plugins. A public website check alone cannot reliably confirm whether the server has received a security fix.
Three questions for your website provider
Are we affected?
Ask which PHP version and hosting environment your website or application uses, and whether the recent advisories apply.
Have the fixes been verified?
Request confirmation of the relevant server updates. Updating website content, themes or plugins alone does not establish that the PHP runtime has been patched.
Who owns ongoing maintenance?
Check responsibility for updates, backups, recovery, access controls and support, so important work does not fall between your agency and host.
What should a business website review cover?
A useful review connects technical maintenance with business performance. Establish who manages your domain, hosting, software and administrator access. Then consider how easily visitors can find your services and make an enquiry.
A more detailed assessment can cover software support status, backup and recovery arrangements, mobile usability, page performance, forms and search visibility. Agree the scope first; security testing requires separate authorisation.
Signs your website needs attention
Security concerns often bring longstanding website problems into focus. You may already be dealing with:
- An outdated design or a poor experience on mobile.
- Slow pages, unreliable forms or too few enquiries.
- A website that is difficult for your team to update.
- Unclear support arrangements or reliance on a previous developer.
- Ageing bespoke software that is expensive to maintain or integrate.

Should you upgrade your PHP website or migrate?
The right choice depends on what your website does and how it is maintained. A brochure website has different requirements from an online shop, customer portal or bespoke business application. Assess functionality and support needs before selecting a replacement technology.
Review & support
Understand your current setup and maintenance responsibilities. Identify immediate actions and agree what ongoing support your business needs.
Website redesign
Plan a clearer, easier-to-manage website built around your customers, your services and the enquiries you want to generate.
Software modernisation
Assess ageing PHP applications and suitable alternatives, with discovery covering data, integrations, functionality and a phased migration plan.
Considering moving away from PHP? We can assess whether an alternative architecture suits your requirements. A static site, for example, can remove the need for a publicly accessible PHP runtime. Forms, integrations, hosting and administrator access still need appropriate protection. No technology choice eliminates every security risk.
How to plan a website migration without overlooking SEO
Before a rebuild, document existing pages and important URLs. Identify useful content to retain and plan redirects where addresses change. Review page titles, headings, internal links and indexing settings so customers and search engines can still find your content.
Test enquiry forms, bookings, integrations and mobile layouts before launch. Agree responsibility for domain and DNS changes, backups, launch checks and ongoing support. Bespoke software discovery should also cover data migration, user permissions and the systems your team relies on.
Website reviews for East Midlands and UK businesses
Digital Office Group is based in Ashby-de-la-Zouch and works with businesses across the East Midlands and wider UK. We can discuss website redesign, maintenance requirements and bespoke software modernisation, including whether a migration away from PHP is appropriate.
Start with your website address, any known problems and what you want to achieve. We will discuss your requirements and agree the next step. An introductory review is not a security certification or a guarantee that a website is free of vulnerabilities.
PHP website security and migration: frequently asked questions
What does the “PHP cyber attack UK” news mean for my business?
The immediate issue is critical vulnerabilities in PHP that could expose affected websites and applications to attack. This does not establish that your own website has been hacked. Ask your provider to confirm whether your environment is affected and that the latest applicable fixes and mitigations are in place.
Does every PHP website need replacing?
No. A supported, appropriately patched and maintained PHP website may continue to meet your needs. A rebuild should be justified by your business requirements and the condition of your existing system.
Does updating WordPress resolve the PHP issue?
Updating WordPress is separate from updating the PHP runtime on the server. Your hosting provider or developer should verify that the relevant PHP fixes are in place.
Can we keep our domain and existing content?
A migration can usually be planned around your existing domain and suitable content. We would assess redirects, search visibility, forms, integrations and email-related DNS records before agreeing a launch plan.
What does an initial review include?
An introductory discussion about your website, its purpose, your current support arrangements and any known concerns. We then recommend the next step. A detailed security audit, penetration test or incident investigation is separate work and would need an agreed scope.
