What to Do with Empty Toner Cartridges and Consumables

What should you do with an empty toner bottle, a used printer drum or a full waste toner cartridge? It is a common question when replacing printer supplies, and the answer is not always to put everything in the same recycling bin.

Printer consumables recycling should cover more than empty toner cartridges. A good office process includes toner bottles, drums, imaging units, ink cartridges and waste toner containers, with an appropriate return route for each.

At Digital Office Group, we recommend making recycling part of your everyday print management, rather than waiting until a cupboard is overflowing with used supplies.

What should I do with empty toner bottles and cartridges?

Check whether your printer manufacturer or consumables supplier offers a return scheme. Confirm that it accepts your particular brand and cartridge type before sending anything back.

Keep the used item intact and follow the return instructions. Retain the replacement cartridge’s bag and box until you know whether they are needed for packaging. For Xerox cartridge returns, the manufacturer advises sealing the used cartridge in the replacement cartridge’s bag and protecting it in the replacement box.

Avoid leaving used supplies loose beside the printer, where they can be confused with new stock or accidentally thrown away.

Can printer drums and imaging units be recycled?

Used drum units and imaging units may have a manufacturer recycling route. Check the instructions supplied with the replacement and confirm acceptance using the consumable’s part number.

Do not assume a box labelled “toner recycling” also accepts drums, fusers, transfer units or maintenance kits. Include these items when discussing your recycling arrangements so every replacement part has a clear destination.

What should I do with a full waste toner cartridge or bottle?

A waste toner container is different from an empty toner supply cartridge: it holds toner collected inside the machine. Tell your recycling provider that you have a full waste toner container so it can confirm the correct return process.

Follow your machine’s instructions for removal, sealing and packaging. Keep the contents contained, and do not empty or rinse the bottle to prepare it for recycling. For a damaged or leaking container, ask your service provider for handling instructions before packing it.

Can toner cartridges go in the normal recycling bin?

Do not put printer consumables into mixed office recycling unless your waste provider specifically confirms that it accepts them. A toner cartridge should not be treated as ordinary plastic packaging.

Use a dedicated return scheme or an appropriate specialist collector instead. A clearly labelled collection point makes it easier for staff to keep used consumables separate from everyday rubbish.

How does Xerox Eco Box recycling work?

The Xerox Eco Box programme provides a way to collect eligible genuine Xerox supplies together for return. Xerox’s UK guidance recommends this option for more than five items, with a bundled single-item return process for five or fewer.

Before adding toner cartridges, drums or waste containers, check the current acceptance and packaging instructions. Do not assume every component or another manufacturer’s supplies can go into the same box.

Visit our Xerox Eco Box recycling page for more information. The Xerox UK recycling programme also provides current return and collection instructions.

What about ink cartridges and other printer consumables?

Include ink cartridges, fusers, transfer units and maintenance kits when reviewing your arrangements. Ask your supplier which return route accepts each item and whether it needs to be packaged separately. Keep anything that has not been confirmed as eligible out of your cartridge collection box until you have an answer.

What is the best way to organise printer consumables recycling at work?

We recommend keeping the process simple enough for everyone in the office to follow.

Create a clearly labelled collection point

Choose a secure, dry location and keep used consumables separate from unopened supplies. Display which brands and items are accepted, with a named contact for anything that needs checking.

Keep the correct packaging

Follow the return provider’s instructions for bags, caps, covers and boxes. Do not dismantle consumables to make them fit. Keep unrelated waste and any packaging the scheme does not accept out of the collection box.

Give someone responsibility for arranging returns

Nominate one person to check the collection area and organise returns before boxes become overfilled. For businesses with several offices, use the same instructions at each site. Ask the provider which waste records should be retained for your collections.

Review unused stock before ordering more

Check part numbers before ordering replacement supplies and review spare stock when printers are replaced. Keep unopened, usable cartridges separate from items awaiting recycling, and speak to your supplier about any stock you no longer need.

Frequently asked questions about printer consumables recycling

Where can I recycle printer cartridges near me?

Start with your printer supplier or manufacturer. A postal return or collection scheme may be available, so a local drop-off point is not always necessary. Before using a local recycler, confirm that it accepts business waste and your specific consumables.

Can compatible or remanufactured toner cartridges be recycled?

Ask your cartridge supplier which take-back arrangements it offers. Manufacturer programmes may exclude compatible, refilled or remanufactured cartridges. Check acceptance before adding them to a manufacturer’s collection box.

Is toner cartridge recycling free?

Check the terms of the service. Ask whether boxes, postage and collections are included, whether minimum quantities apply and which products qualify. Do not assume every return arrangement is free.

What should I do with unused toner cartridges?

Check whether they can be used in another printer within your business, then speak to the original supplier about a possible return. Keep unopened, usable supplies separate from used consumables awaiting recycling.
