Small - Medium sized business VOIP-based Phone Systems
What is it?
A PABX is a Private Automated Branch eXchange, which is the device used in organizations to share incoming phone lines among handsets on employees desks, and typically used to transfer calls from one person to another. Sometimes the term PABX is shortened to PBX.
A VOIP PABX (more commonly described as IP PABX) uses the power of modern computers to digitize voice traffic (VOIP) and replace the traditional PABX systems that were historically a box full of relay switches. By using computers to handle phone calls, all sorts of powerful features become available. Features like voicemail, and voicemail-to-email which used to be expensive add-ons are now standard in IP PABX systems.
By relying on computer networks, rather than dedicated copper cabling, IP PABX systems reduce the need for specialist technicians to visit a site to add, move or change a phone extension. In the same way that your PC doesn't care which network port you connect it to, your IP handset can simply be moved to another desk, plugged back into the network at the new desk.
